Plant help for a newbie

I don't know if anyone has ever tried this, but Home Depot and other places will sell you sheet glass or acrylic, correct? Why not size a piece to put on your tank?

I've known a lot of folks to go to Home Depot, Lowe's, etc. and get Plexiglass cut to fit right in the store. They usually have an extra fee to cut it, but it's nominal. Rather than relying on measurements, I would likely make a cardboard template of the tank top before getting it cut and finding out I forgot to account for the lip of the tank top or something else silly like that.
