Hey everybody , Im just getting back into the aquarium hobby after a few years. I currently have a 55 gallon set up with a selection of tropical fish. I also have a terrace system so plant height is an issue. Does anyone have any suggestions on plants for the beginner , and they need to be hardy. Due to being in the military my time is some what limited . Thanks for any help on this topic and I'll post pics soon.

java fern is good for the beginner, doesn't need ferts or a lot of light to grow and is VERY hardy. hornwort is good also. i am sure some of the other members here will have a better list than i do.

It depends on how much light (watts per gallon is a rough measure people use) you have on your tank, but I've done well with the plants in my .sig. The Java fern and wisteria especially so.

Crypts are low maintenance and lighting isn't an issue. Also Bolbitis, onion bulbs. Check out Mgamer's low light plants on AC. He has a wide selection of good plants and I haven't heard anyone complain.

Awesome thanks for the helpful info. Now my next question. What are the recommendations for substrate? I've really been out of the hobby for too long.

I just used a fine gravel and laced the lower portion of it with laterite.
