I have a HOB filter on my planted tank. The spot where the filter dumps into the tank is bare because whatever I plant there comes up rooted or just mangled and killed. I need a suggestion for something to plant in the back that will reach the top of the water and can handle the current and doesn't require crazy high wattage.

jungle val would work. my wife has it all around her filters and they do just fine.

i say no to the vals. i have some near where my filter lets out and it throws my vals around and tangles them with other plants. broadleaf ludwigia holds up pretty well though.

I second the jungle val if your tank is large enough. Leaves are thicker than other vals. Really tough plant.

Went to the fish store last night after work and looked at jungle vals. They did look really bulky for my tank. So I went with Crypt. Spiralis. The guy said it has a good root system and sturdy leaves that will reach the top. I also picked up a cardinal plant and dwarf sagittara. The guy claimed the dwarf sagittara will stay small and fill in like ground cover. The cardinal will just stay bushy and get really colorful. The guy also said that dechlorinated tap water will kill snails. LOL so most of his information is probably wrong.

How about using a deflector? That's what I do on all my planted tanks.
I use a small water bottle, cut the top and bottom off, slice it and then shorten that a little to fit that particular filter and tape it to the lid using clear package tape. This deflects the flow out the ends and allows you to plant directly in front of the filter hiding it better.
On some tanks where I have the filter in the corner. I cut the deflector so it directs the water flow to only one side.

EDIT-Add On; This deflector serves another purpose for me too. It drastically reduces out gassing the C02 as well because it eliminates that splashing that happens when the water level is not at the rim. Plus I don't have to clean the glass tops as much because water is not splashing up creating that calcium/hard water buildup.
