The lights in the standard hood are just not strong enought for this plant. If you do not want to upgrade the lights, stick with the low light plants: Java Fern, Annubias, Java Moss would be the way to go.

Thanks. I have not looked into upgrading. Can I just replace the flo. bulbs or do I need to buy a new set of hoods?

Do you know what type of plant it is. Its hard to tell from the picture and a lot of plants look alike. I would trim off the brown and yellow parts to allow the healty part of the plant to grow out.

You could either:

a) Buy a glass top and then buy a stronger light

b) Look into retro-fit kits at ahsupply.com. Call them on monday and discuss it with Kim. Otherwise, wait and let some of the experienced ahsupply customers to chime in with suggestions.

P.S. If you upgrade the lights, co2 would be a wise option. You could do Excel, DIY or pressurized. Ferts are very cheap at Greg's site and with that you will have the ability to have a fully planted tank.
