was it javafern? If it is, and you planted it in the substrate, that is why the first one died. You want to attach javafern to a piece of the hardscape, driftwood. rock etc and then let the roots attach to it. If you bury the rhizome in the substrate it will die on you. so take the baby and tie it loosely with sewing thread to an object that you would like it to grow on. By the time the thread disintegrates the plantlet should be attached.

Not sure if it is java fern, but it looks like it to me. I guess i'll start looking for something to tie it to. Thank you!

If it is Java Fern, then that is how Java Fern reproduces. It grows a bunch of plantlets on a leaf. Eventually when the plantlets get to a certain size they are kicked out of the house and told to support themselves (or they can be manually removed) and the parent plant starts the process over with a new generation of kids.

As tharsis mentioned, just make sure the plantlet isn't buried like the parent and it should be fine. It is a slow grower so it may be a long time before the baby grows into much.

Cut off the dead leaves immediately, or the rest of the leaves will die too. You can just tie it to a terracotta pot or any small rock/decor,etc.

Thanks so much for all of the responses!! Do you guys suggest I remove the plantlet or let if come off itself ? Any suggestions on finding rocks or wood in my yard to tie it to.

Thanks

I find removing the plantlets from dying leaves is best, when I leave them on to fall off on their own they often die instead. don't know why.

you can use a dab of krazy glue to attach the new lil plantlet to a rock or piece of wood. looks much better than string!

just take the plantlet out of the tank, remove as much of the dead leaf matter as possible, dab the plant with a paper towel to remove some of the water, make sure the area of the rock or wood you are gluing it to is somewhat dry, glob a little krazy glue on wood/rock, and hold the plant there until it's set and the glue is dry. put it back in the tank. tada! lol.

you can use any brand krazy glue or super glue. just be sure that the glue says cyanoacrylate on the label.
