can u use the Oil-Dri stuff from Walmart as a plant substrate? ive heard of other people using it but i dont know how well it will preform since they have never put any updates on their tanks

Is this stuff like kitty litter? I've seen reports on kitty litter that were more-or-less positive, but you'd need to know what all they put in there.

out of curiosity, what is people's motivation to not use normal substrates?

Money is the main motivator. I am not sure what the oildry product is, but I believe one of their products is soilmaster select. SMS is a very good substrate for planted aquariums and only cost $12-$17 per 50lb bag. SMS still requires fertilization, but has high CEC.

i got mine at home depot of all places. Its called aquatic plant soil and it was only 6 bucks for a 10lb bag. works good too. if you decide to go there make sure you wash it first and when you fill the tank place some thing over the substrate like plastic or paper so that the water doesnt jack up the residue of the substrate.
