I am looking for some plants to put in my newly made 20g long whites tree frog vivarium.

The tank itself has a slate background that is grouted and it will have a base of around 1" of peagravel and then 2" of substrate. It will look similar to my 5.5g View attachment 58441

The first plant I am looking for would be a vine that would exploit the background and climb it.

I was thinking about creeping fig but I don't know if it could be contained. Any other plants that have those same habits? Or what about ficus pumila?

The second would be a groundcover. I am looking for something that will stay very low to the ground 1-1 1/2" or less. Perhaps hc but I'm not very well versed in its habits so I don't know.

And then a plant to add a little color. Not sure what though. Any types of caladiums do well in a vivarium that won't outgrow the tank? Suggestions are desperatley wanted for this plant.

Thanks in advance for the advice and help.

Check out www.blackjungle.com. Lots of plants and caresheets.

I think a creeping ficus or Philodendron scandens would work for your vine. I would go with mosses or Selaginella for the groundcover. I don't think you'll find any caladiums that will do well in that tank, but you can probably find some colorful spineless bromeliads or peperomias that you like.

I have looked there and they have some really good articles and plants. I was hoping to avoid the whole order online thing as I don't have a card of my own.

What would be a good moss for the ground cover though?

Thanks for the help.

Do you think that the ficus would crawl up the grout?

I missed the Selaginella suggestion and oddly enough today I was looking at it.

Does that stay close to the ground? And does it cover nicely under low light conditions.

This will most likely have about 20ws on it. Possibly 40 in the future if I can make a hood to cover and unsightly dual florescent ceiling light

There are a lot of Selaginella species, and they have different growth habits. Some form mossy carpets, others are more erect and fern-like. Do you remember which species or varieties you were looking at?

I have not actually grown Selaginella in a terrarium setting, but the species I have had did fine in low-light settings outdoors and in. Most Selaginella are forest floor species and are adapted to low light.

Either of those should do the trick. They are both varieties of S. kraussiana, which is, I believe, a South African species, with a low, sheet-moss-like habit. I prefer the solid green varieties to these yellowish ones, but that's just me.
