Plant Tank Crash

im not sure what could have caused it, but thought id give it a read. sorry to hear.

I don't understand your lighting. 10000K I get, but "6500K blue actinic" makes no sense. An actinic light that looks blue will have a color temp of 20,000K or even higher. a 6500K bulb is a regular daylight bulb.

Tank temp? Any fish or inverts? If so, how are they? What's your water's NO3 level? Do you use a drop checker? If so, has it been a steady green?
Temp 79 degrees F. Yes fish. No inverts. Fish are fine. No NO2 or NO3. No i do not use a drop checker. Never had a use for one. What is it?

A drop checker is the easiest (and best) way to see that your CO2 is in the 15-30PPM range. For (tons) more, search the forum for "drop checker".

What it is: 4dKH water with a little pH indicator solution added (usually, a few drops of the regular pH stuff in any API master kit).

Where/How it works: It sits in your aquarium with an air gap between the above solution & the tank's water. The CO2 dissolved in the tank water reaches equilibrium with the checker's solution, lowering the pH a bit.

What it means: Blue solution means little or no CO2. Green is 15-30PPM CO2 (assuming you used 4dKH based solution - is great for plants, non toxic to fish), Yellow means your CO2 is >30PPM, ease up on it some, or risk harming your fish.

the tank has been running for 2+ years now without any significant problems. Definitely no mass extinction of species! No meteors or comets (heh-heh). To my knowledge no introduction of harmful chemicals. No rational upfront explanations. Just speculation. Has anyone else ever experienced this? I would be interested in hearing about your tank circumstances.

Maybe I will increase the CO2 a bit.

0 nitrates is not good for a planted tank. Nitrate is their primary fertilizer.

Actually it can be their primary ferts in certain environments but there are other ferts that do just as well in combinations.

So you are using a nitrogen supplement other than some kind of nitrate? I'd be interested in knowing what that is.
