I am planning on getting silver dollars and i would like to have plants in my tank....but i don't want to have mutalated plants by the silver dollars. Should i go for the fake plants with don't look nearly as good or should i can the idea of getting silver dollars??

do fake plants look any good compared to real ones??
Depends on your sense of taste.
There are some very nice looking artificial plants out there- I've got a bag of 'em in my closet.
I can't bear looking at them in a tank.

I like the look of fake plants and have been using them for years. I really like the looks of sillk ones but even some plastic ones aren't bad.

Having said that, I'm about to set up my first planted tank, a 20 gallon, and will be using the extra plants in my 35 gallon. So both my tanks will probably end up being planted :D

...and how far you are from the aquarium! Personally, I think fake plants can look very good especially after a month or so and they get a little "growth" on them. I don't care for silver dollars though either.

ok

i was just gonna post something about this - i had some rotalia i think that was hidden behind some fake plants i guess the sd's didnt see the rotalia i then moved the fake plants figuring that the sd's didnt like this type of plants and the next day the rotalia was mowed to the ground! i want to put the sd's in my main 55 but i have some real plants in there - so i bought a test plant to see if my sd's are gonna be plants eaters i got some moneywort i think so far they havent touched it but i'm sure when i go home in a while they might have torn it apart!
fake plants - i like them as background plants i don't have a pure planted tank even in my big tank i have a mix it looks quite nice!!!
plus if you have ottos they grow some nice brown alage they will like to eat
