Planting on sand (or something like it)

How do you guys plant bunched or stem plants on a fine substrate like sand or eco-complete? Do the plants hold without anything that supports them?

I have long tweezers that I use to anchor the stem into the substrate (Eco Complete) by pushing the plant pretty deep into the substrate. I do the same for the black sand.

I dig a little hole, then put them in and cover the roots, they seem to hold well
