Planting roots of hornwort...

I bought a bunch of hornwort and 2 java ferns!

There are rubber band-like things on the hornworts' roots. Can I take these off and plant each stem?
 
I planted the hornwort with the bands, but there are other long pieces that are without the bottom part of the stem. Can I plant these? will they grow normally?
 
Hornwort is a great plant for the aquarium. The down side to the plant is that you cannot plant it in hopes it will grow roots. The plant recieves all of its nutrients directly from the water. Older parts of the plant will eventually become ratty and fall apart. On the plus side, the plant grows very quickly and should more than make up for the decaying parts you remove.

Welcome to growing plants! Beware getting adicted to the hobby. I have more fun growing them than I do keeping the fish that are living with them! :-P

Btw, the java moss will look good if you have some driftwood to attach it to. It doesn't grow roots, per say, but anchors. You'll notice them as the black, tangly threads on the rhizome.
 
I haven't had a lot of luck rooting a hornwort. Its best kept in my opinion as a floating plant. When I have them float, I have less plant death, and less dead plant all over my tank and clogging my filter. It really can be a messy plant. When i stick a portion in the gravel or under somethign heavy, that part dies and disentegrates, and it ends up floating, and it wasn't worth my time to keep on doing it.
 
Rather then planting it in the gravel, try wraping strands under a driftwood branch. That's what I do and it grows up wonderfully and looks great. This stuff grows so fast though, I remove about 50% weekly. I've actually measured mine growing about 1 1/2 per day!

good suggestion. now if I only had drift wood.

i feel the same way. I did have a 5 gal plant only tank and it got overrun w/ little waterbugs that tore the plants up. so ive just got a few fish to control that.
