are there any plants that will survive with oscars? i'm gonna put wood in tank but i want plants too

i've read that oscars can and do have a tendency to rearrange their tanks decor and such, so i think they would uproot any plants you might have in there. give it a shot, if you don't mind having it possibly not work, but it is worth the try, as plants can be a very beneficial part of keeping a tank's water healthy. i have no experience with oscars and planted tanks myself, so i don't know if your fish would eat the plants. and this might depend some on the particular oscar's appetite for greenery too.

maybe you might try a potted sword or two, and use those reddish brown clay pots and pile the tank's substrate about halfway up the pot side to keep it from tipping or getting knocked over. how big is your oscar? if he's still little, you can more wood/stones/etc, since he's not full size and probably can't knock down a lot of stuff.

there's a tank on www.plantedtank.net that houses an adullt oscar in a heavily planted tank.

all other reports suggest oscars summarily devour plants. . .shake em like a puppy does his chew toy

in other words there is the slimmest chance if raised in the tank and exhibits the temperament to leave plants alone you might get away with it. but have a back-up plan. . . that includes 75 gallons for your oscar :D

cheers-K

moss... that's about the only thing that they did not mess with when i had oscars.... i miss them oscars... but every time i go to the pet store and see oscars they always look sad :( but yea moss ... they dont mess with that .....

I have a sword and a very large java fern as well as elodea in wiht my oscar. He summarily rearranges the tank each evening (goes as far as to snap the line holding the fern to move it) until its too his liking. If i leave it where he puts them, he doesn't bother the plants, lol. He has done some damage, specifically to the sword. I think if you try potted it might work, but would really depend on the Oscar.

the only plants Ive been able to keep with my oscar are expensive plastic ones. hahaha you can have live ones but they shred them apart while moving them, even when you do "replant" they just look haggard lol. not to mention they dont have much time to gorw and repair.

Im fairly certain though that my oscars arent eating the plants per say, but just shredding them in the moving proccess.

I've tried anubias, java fern, moss, and floaters. I think my Osacrs have some basic hatred of plants, 'cuase they'll just rip 'em apart. The don't rearrange them at all... unless you call rearranging little pieces of shredded plants floating at the top of the tank :)

I've resigned myself to plastic plants.
