plants and PH?

Was just curious. Can live aquarium plants change the PH in tanks?

I had Wisteria in a tank with my african cichlids and the PH was around 7.2. I took all the wisteria out of the tank to give to a friend and within 24 hours my PH jumped up to 7.8. I havent done anything else to the tank so I am kinda baffled as to why that happened. I am not concerned( my africans need to be around 8.1 anyway so its not a bad thing) I am more curious.

Some plants can alter ph levels, as well as some driftwood types can do the same. There is some kind of rocks that will also alter the ph in a tank.

well obviously it depends on the plants, most can handle a wide range of ph. 8.1 is high though...
