All of the plants in my tank are basically healthy and grow pretty good, with the exception of cabomba caroliniana and the red temple. Cabomba started out very dense and green, but now it is sort of yellowish and wimpy, with long very brittle stems and small leaves that constantly fall off... The red temple is sort of reddish-yellow and it doesn't grow or grows so slow that I can't see it... Any suggestions?

My best guess is your light is too dim (not enough light). I use to have problems with cabomba too when I only had 2 bulbs over my 100gal tank (do not remember the watts, it was whatever came with the canopy). I now use PC lights at about 500watts. My cabomba grows like mad!!! Started with this 3inch "sliver" now have about a dozen 6-8 inch plants after only about 3 months. The caroliniana is a light lover too but have never had one.

PS--I think the temple is a bog plant and does not do well underwater for long.

yeah I would get rid of the cobomba.....requires strong light and if it doesnt get it can turn into a big mess

I have 2x 40W full spectrum lamps over a 55g Is that enough light? A also started using fertilizers last week, I'll see if that'll help...
By the way can there be too much light??? I know about the algae, but can it hurt the plants???
Thanks.

2 X40 watt bulbs over a 55 is not nearly enough for cobomba...id say a bare minimum of 3watts per gallon....you have 1.5 WPG. You would need to get Compact Florecent light. Of course once you do that, then you need to worry about C02 injection and really getting your levels right or else yes you will have bad algae problems.
