So about a week ago my power went out at work and the filter, heater, and light went off for a day or so...a few fish kicked the bucket but for the next 3-4 days my plants were going INSANE. I figured this was due to all the dead algae acting as fertilizer. I mean the stems to my banana plants were growing 4-6 inches a day! Now i cant get them to grow like that... I tried adding Co2 but Im curious as to how long it takes before you notice drastic growth, also how else can i encourage it. My light bulb is a wayyy too old 20w bulb and for the 29gallon tank its just not enough, I know.. but until I change it what else can I do?

Wow! I have a planted tank and I have no explanation for that one. Could the water have been too warm before? One of the things which were taken out during that period is what caused this but what a bonus. Now you just need to figure out which of these things they don't need and remove it.
As for drastic growth. You need good lighting, good fertilizer and co2. I've taken out the co2 before and things still grew but much/much slower.

i actaully raised the temp of the tank to 80, used to hover around 74-76 all the time... not sure what it was...
Yeah, if there is enough bioload, plants will just grow like crazy. My lilies in my goldfish barrel grow a foot a day. I have no idea how, but new leaves pop to the surface during the summer months when I feed more heavily.

Well, many plants grow taller under less than ideal lighting. They are trying to get more light. They grow tall and thin to reach towards your lights. But this isnt necessarily a good thing. High intensity lighting will keep these plants more compact and bushier.
