Anyone here grow plants in a separate tank/bin where they do not worry about overdosing fertilizer b/c there is no fish? I am thinking of using a spare 10gal to grow plants to put in my other tank. I would dose fertilizer more so than a tank with fish. There won't be a heater(summer heat keeps the water real warm) & no filter. I will use lots of light and sand on the bottom.

Do you think I need anything else?
I have seen others use regular dirt and leaves, mulch, compost and then add sand. How do you do that, can I mix it since there is no fish? What kinds do I need?
:feedback:

depending on the plants in question i might go as far as to skip the water... especially with no filter to move the water. you can use w/c water from your tank to fertilize and clean water for humidity/watering.

ive been wanting a plant growout tank. i can easily propagate my Hygro all the time and grow the babies out and sell them.

Emersed plants welt when yo put them in the water. I don't want to go through a time where the plants die and slowly grow back, that defeats the purpose. Or at least not a good choice for me..

The plants and fertilizers have no issues with fish.
CO2 does perhaps, because folks seem to have troubles and impatient with adjusting the correct amount often times.

But not fertilizers, EI supplies plenty for any light level and species.
No one has ever killed fish due to fert dosing I am aware of. Plenty of fish only folks kill fish without any ferts, so those potential causes must be ruled out before blaming ferts. I've bred discus, as have others and my client's as well, dozen of other species, all sorts of super sensitive shrimp species.........never an issue.

That said, plenty of folks use grow out tanks to add new plants to their main tank.

In that case, people who have grow out tanks for their plants, can you post pics and info on how they work???
