Plants Recommendations for 50 Gallon Discus Tank

Thank you! You mean adding another pieces of good with needle fern? or more fern on that wood? My friend is giving me 4 pots of these narrow leaf jungle val pots but I think I can maybe keep 2 pots in my tank. (I will update on the tank tmr when I get the plants) I might attach a trident fern on a small lava rock. My bn pleco is actually doing good job kicking out all the waste under the wood piece, all the waste has been push to the left side of the tank lol which I can remove easily
I actually never throw out the filter pad but I do change the biomedia if it gets too dirty. Where do you get the filter intake extension? Sorry it actually the AC 70 and it is on the side because the back of the tank is touching the wall. I might switch to a canister filter if necessary.
I am going to get some sterna cories and the tank should be complete :)

Oops, I got timed out again on my reply, eating dinner :).

You should almost never toss filter media; sponges, "biobits" or ceramic tubes can last for many years, almost indefinitely. I've used some for 15-20 years. Floss & polyester batting last for at least months. Rinse them out & reuse.

Your friend's jungle val looks like the more vigorous kind I have. Go ahead & try it...& then get java fern needle, narrow or trident, you'll be happier if you want less maintenance on another piece of wood.

Look for AC intake tubes to fit your filter, it's the same as the 1 it comes with & fits over the tapered end.

I'm glad your BN is helpin

Normally a discus tank won't have a lot of plants. That's because it can be more difficult to clean up a planted tank and often there is plant melt degrading water quality to an extent. That's why I like the idea of keeping the plants in pots, so you can lift and siphon. Will you be keeping it bare-bottom? That would be great, but if you add any substrate, best it is a fine layer of sand (I like Pool Filter Sand) so it doesn't trap any detritus. The low pH of a discus tank can cause issues with certain anaerobic bacteria.

So the high discus temps can also cause difficulty for plants, but keep my tanks at 80°f and there's quite a few plants that do well. My biggest suggestion is amazon sword (or melon swords) in pots. I dirt my pots and cap with PFS. I've had the same swords in the same pots for 4 years now without changing dirt. All I do is add a couple Osmocote granules every 6 months or so to recharge the dirt nutrients.

Aponogenton crispus would make a nice tall barrier type plant as well. I have it in my 90g and it reaches the surface. Also I have a crinum natans plant that reaches across 3/4 of the tank that would do well planted in a pot.

Oh and for red plants, a red tiger lotus in a pot or ludwigia sp.mini in a pot are your best bets! Also a lot of melon swords have nice red leaves.

I have a 50 gallon disk tank with 4 plate and 2 heavenly attendants and I am intending to supplant the silver fox and normal pleco with L144 plecos. What plants would i be able to keep with the disk, holy messengers and L144 without them eating the plants?

I am utilizing the Jcp full range lights
I will probably include Anubias, wilderness val, java plant, and red cross breed lugwigia

what is a decent plant to include?

I am wanting to include the Anubias in the blue territory where the spot is higher and the java greenery in the red zones which is in the lower spot so the plant is out of sight and the plant ought to be behind the Anubis for more information visit MRE.

for the root plants, I am going to plant them in mud pots with water soils. Do you think I have to include a wave creator in the tank?
