Plants slowly dying with LED hood.

The TaoTronics lights are more for reef tanks with the blues and 10000K. They have a hydroponics light but it's too red. Both of these combinations are not quite right for planted tanks. Subrosa, do you use these on your planted tanks or your reefs?

I also like rapidled.com and actually have purchased a kit in the past (but still not used) but I like the build quality of buildmyled and the fact you can just lay the strip on top of your tank without having suspension cables.

A couple sellers of the Tao style fixtures will do them with custom LED's, you could replace some of the blues with cool whites to bring the total K rating down some. Plants will grow with the stock fixture though just dim the blue channel down.

It would be overkill on most planted tanks though.

I assure you that if a light will grow corals it will grow plants. There's a fallacy among many FW plant people that blue actinic lighting is useless for plants. When growing corals, what one is actually doing is growing plants in the first place, since most commonly kept corals derive the bulk of their nutrition from the photosynthesis carried out by tiny plants living within the coral's tissue. Reef lighting definitely looks bluer than standard FW lighting, but the two channel dimmability allows you to tailor the spectrum and intensity to your tastes. I have a single unit with 90 degree optics on a 47 column reef tank. The dimensions of the tank are 20"L x 18"W x 30"H. As you can imagine getting light to the bottom was a challenge. The original lighting was a single 150W HQI metal halide. The LEDs are currently running at about 50% of max output and the Brain Coral on the bottom is MUCH happier than it was under the halide.

From plant tank forums, the users say that the reef lights color cause algae problems. Ditto for the hydroponics lights. Anyone here with planted tanks successfully using high watt or any watt reef lighting?

Probably depends on the light requirements of the FW plants.

I suppose if you bombarded a tank full of low-light plants with more light than they needed, you'd get algae growth.

this is a bit over a $100 but if you look at the mini lights on this page...they can grow any plants(extremely high) and the light looks great! i just ordered 4(regular sized @ $250 each) for my 112G show tank...

Finally got the glass top and strip light today!

The glass top is a little awkward on a 10gal given the small footprint. The hinge blocks out some of the light, no matter where you put the light. I didn't cut to fit the vinyl strip for the rear of the versa-top yet because the filter butts right up to the glass as is. I'm not sure I'll have room for even the locking tab of the back strip near the filter. Looks like I'd have to have no rear strip near the filter.

Here's how the tank looked before: http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?271311-24-LED-flexible-strip-light

Looks awesome!

Thanks Patty.

The lamps are Zoo Med Ultra Sun Daylight CFLs. 10watts / 6500K. Two lamps in the fixture. The fixture is of OK quality. It's got an aluminum heat-shield above the lamps. On/off switch in on the back. It's vented well, but I just noticed my tank went from ~80 to 83degF in an hour or so. YIKES!! (turned back the heater) The LEDs gave of NO heat.

Sweet, i hope those plants start to grow out and become a jungle for you ! After i get my car insurance issues sorted out i plan on doing something similar. Looking great freshy
