Aries, how long have you had your cardinalis? I ask b/c mine (I thought is was Alternanthera reineckii but looks the same) took awhile (a month or so) to settle in. I don't have as much light as you and the lower leaves die off. Yours looks very similar to how mine looked initially and may need more time to adjust, just keep pruning off the dying leaves. You might try pinching off a small offshoot and let it float, if that piece does well, then it may just be lighting.

My experience with Alternanthera reineckii (so not sur if its the same as cardinalis) is similar to Beviking's, and I have over 5wpg. It just hung around for close to a month before finally growing.

I also had little success with microswords, it hung around for awhile and grew a little but much too slow for my taste. I switched to e. tenellus as well and couldn't be happier, the thing grows like a weed. One thing that I heard that was interesting, someone told me they believe the red variety of e. tenellus is just the regular tenellus under very bright lights. Can anyone confirm? Dwarf sag is also a good choic for an easy foreground plant if you want a soft green lawn.

People say rotala macrandra is difficult to grow, mine grows like wildfire. One of the fastest growing plants in my tank.

ludwigia repens is probably the easiest colored plants to deal with. Will even grow in low light conditions but will not turn the purplish red color.
