plants that crayfish won't eat

free would be nice. however i've no connections and am too new to the forum to beg :headshake2:. so i figured i would pay my own way to start with. latter on when i had some thing to give in trade .... :thm:

I have two CPO's & the only thing I saw them try was the java fern. The look on the female Lucy's face was EW. She immediately stopped gnawing & dropped the piece she had on the java moss LOL.

:grinyes: yeah it's amazing how much personality crays have. they remind me of kittens then as they grt older cats. years ago i had a molly get proflated and it wasn't gonna make it so i gave it to the cray (after peaceful euthinazia) and as soon as it got ahold of the corpse it took two or three bites then holding the body in one hand (big claw) it ran around the tank "like hell yeah this is delicious look at what i got. sweet mana from heaven." as i type this one cray is chasing the ghost shrimp around claws open and feelers flappin in the breeze.

HA! Sounds like your cray is a ham! I'm new to them, but they definitely have awesome little personalities. I did see them picking through baby tears today, but they looked like they were combing them. Not even looking for food, just enjoying the feel maybe? I hope your crays leave those plants alone! Do yours like sinking tablets? Mine seem to really like the Hikari bottom feeder tabs... whenever they're not munching on crab cuisine or shrimp pellets they make a bee line for those.

in the past i used the hikari sinking algea waifers the ones with the pleco on them. i see they have mini waifers so that is what i will use, i also use real name brand tums dissolved in the filter and given after a molt to add calcium. time to time i will drop in fresh veggies when i want some comic relief (green beans look like cigars when crays hold them) they get thier protien for now via fish flakes and injured ghost shrimp.

so far the crawdads tasted the silk plants but left them alone.

right now im working on the theory that aslong as thier protien quota is met and they are not given real whole fish meat food that they will consider the fish co inhabitants too much effort to put on menu. so i am staying away from the shrimp pellets and such.

btw pics of my set up are posted on my profile.

Ah, yes I use the Hikari mini bottom feeder wafers... they really seem to like them, but then again they're super little! I'm going to assume larger crawfish will eat whatever they can get their claws on? Unless the fish is quite larger. I'll leave that info to the pros on this forum! & wow I didn't know you could do that with tums?

hill billy logic. crawdads take up nutrients via thier gills as well. and its been stated that most of thier calcium comes from the water colum. i checked into the ingredients in tums and found that other than the mint flavor they have the same ingerdients as those week end feeder deals at the pet store. minus the food and talc. so far no ill effects from the talc as the filter picks it up very quick. i drop one in every couple of water changes or let them chew on some after a molt especially if the other eats the molted exoskeleton while the moltee is still soft.

please tell me you got that on video because that is so FUNNY!!!!!!!! LMAO!!!!!!!!!!

naw it was a tank before the divorce. and was videoed on exwife's camera so its gone. sorry.

Well... I managed to scrimp together some funding for duck weed. It finally arrived last night. I've heard it can become invasive in home tanks. I doubt that will be a problem as both the shrimp and crawdad are digging it. Right now my hope is that it will grow fast enough to not me munched away.

The cray (other was cannibalized) has learned to hang on filter intake and scoop passing clumps to eat. fortunately since individual plants are so small quite a bit escape his claws.

btw R.I.Ps. Leo.
