I thought about putting plants in my sump to reduce nitrates. What plants would use the most nitrates and grow in my sump? I was going to drill a hole in the bottom of my tidepool 2 and let the water go into a rubbermaid tote below the sump and mount my lights above the tote.

This is definitely doable. I have heard of people doing a veggie filter. I would used fast growing plants that don't require much maintenance such as hornwort.

Even though a veggie filter removes nitrates you will still need to do water changes because there are other toxins in the aquarium that build up besides nitrates and we use nitrates as an indicator to let us know when to change the water. This way we don't have to measure everything.

Hornwort is good. Emergent plants and floaters are also good nitrate sponges; they can uptake nutrients rapidly because they have better access to O2 than submersed plants do.
