I have just changed my setups AGAIN lol but I now have a peacock/convict setup and an electric yellow setup both 55G.
See: http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=199434
What I would like to do is get a couple big plants to kind of cover the whole back of the tanks (maybe java fern and Amazon sword) then get some smaller ones that I can jam into the rocks more like a crawler/vine plant I suppose so they will grow in and around the rocks I don’t know much about plants at all so I will really need help here I am also limited on what I can get to:

Any information on what you think would be better would be fantastic.

Thanks in advance for the advice

yeah i have thought about it but as you said would be expensive and take a long time.

i have been thinking about the java fern and also amazon sword because they grow fast so i only have to buy one then i can just keep cutting them so the back should get full very quick...

I have wisteria and green rotala in the back of one of my 55's.They both grow fast and big, even in low light from my experience with them.I tried swords, but my GT was constantly up-rooting them.

ok so i have been looking around and so far i have found
Anubia Nana
Java Fern
Amazon Sword

i have 2WPG and c02 injection will these plants be ok with my setup?

Those will work fine, but don't expect a lot of growth from the Java fern or the Anubias. They're just not fast growers. They'll work great tucked into the rockwork, too. Java moss is a tough, fast-growing moss that most fish leave alone. Crinum thaianum is a fairly large plant with long, thick, leathery leaves that if left alone to root properly will be able to stand up to a little abuse.

On a side note; I wouldn't say you need CO2 with 2WPG on a 55gal. You'll need a good, rich substrate for the sword(s) before you need CO2.

when i put the tank together i got sand from the creek then got the same amount of substrate pellets and mixed them together should be just LOVELY :) well i hope at $90 a bag better be good lol

your wattage is appropriate for those plants i would think. i'm sorry i can't comment on the co2 as i don't run co2 myself and know very little about it.

i think a sword wall across the back would look lovely! i would think that any plants that are tender or have fragile leaves or stems could potentially get destroyed by cichlids, depending on how likely they are to bite at the plants, so the 'tougher' the plant, the better. java fern may not be tough enough to withstand cichlid 'attacks', lol.

you would probably want to start with at least 4 swords across the back if you plan on making a fairly solid wall of them. from my experience they grow vertically quite quickly but i don't think they would send out plantlets/runners or whatever it's called fast enough to fill in the whole back of the tank in the short term.

i have always been interested in getting some type of moss my only query is don't you have to rubber band it to everything because it doesn't have roots?

was thinking about having java fern on right and left hand side of both tanks with swords in the middle :) when i get it all ill just play around with it till i like it.
