Since all the glass stores are closed today, I will have to wait till Monday to get some quotes for my DIY aquarium. BUT, I was wondering if anyone had bought any glass recently and could give me a "ball park" price in the meantime.
(1/2 " thick 8ft x 2 ft)

Expensive....you may be better off getting a pre made aquarium. What part of Alabama? I think there is Ocean View Aquarium Manufactures in Pasacagula Mississippi. I imagine that they would sell to the public, but am not positive.

Would you care to take a stab at how expensive? I will only need the one sheet, I am building the rest out of plywood. I am only looking for a "ballpark" figure. I live just outside Decatur, AL which is northcentral AL. I will call and compare prices with Ocean View, if you are right, that would be fanstastic.
I can't remember, in my long search for DYI instructions for building a large tank, exactly where I got these instructions, GARF, I think, but the "glass calculator" provided actually said 3/8" was thick enough for 24 inches in height, but I was going to use 1/2" instead. 1/2" is good up to 27" in height (according to the article). If the price is ridiculously higher than 3/8", I will try the 3/8" first.

1/2" is certainly fine for a 8x2 run. The glass is going to cost you somewhere around $175-$225.

I finally got some quotes Monday and they ranged from $222 to $235, so you were on the money. Thank you. They also quoted tempered 3/8" and stated that tempered 3/8" was as strong as untempered 1/2". The temp. 3/8" ranged from $190 to $200. Every place I called "volunteered" that 1/4" would do for that hieght, but I told them there's no way I'm taking that chance. I am considering the temp. 3/8" though.
If there is someone that has experience with DIY plywood tanks, I would welcome any advice or concerns. I am planning to build it, 8'x4'x2'. I am building it in my basement in a room next to our rec room and the front glass is all that will be exposed.
I am planning on making it a "planted aquarium", but I will obviously have to depend on all artificial light.

I live in the northwest area of AL, and i was interested in the Ocean View Aquarium Manufactures you talked about. This place makes all types of aquariums (as far as how big or small)?

I am interested in getting a large aquarium around 60-100gal. and i would like to see if they would sell them for cheaper than the LFS.

I used to live in LA along time ago, went to New Orleans in July and had a blast....ah i love that state.....

All of the aquariums that are sold in LFS here are made by Ocean View (all sizes). I was planning on getting a 125 - 180 gallon, and was going to find if they sold direct to the public. However, my cousin ended up giving me his 110 gallon for free, so I figured there was no reason to go any larger (at least for now) :D
