I have a betta currently in a 2.5 gallon heated drum and I recently decided to upgrade to a 10 gallon community tank. Right now, I'm on day 4 of my fish-less cycle so I have plenty of time to pick out which fish I want to add.

I was thinking of getting a few platies (around 4), preferably a variety that isn't too vibrant or finny so my betta wont confuse them for another betta.

Has anyone had success with keeping a single betta with platies in a ten gallon? I've been slowly buying plants both real and fake so that there's more cover for them and lots of hiding places.

I heard that if you add other fish before the betta, he wont get too aggressive because he hasn't staked out his territory yet.

my sister had her betta in a community tank with guppies, platies, swordtails and cories with no issues. but like many say, it depends on the betta. theyre all different and have different personalities. be sure to have a back up tank in case the betta attacks them.

Thanks. My betta is a little feisty but I don't think he's particularly aggressive. I have a little cardboard cut-out of a red betta that I like to show him so he can flare. He flares aggressively but if I make the "rival" move, he backs away. Never outright attacks the glass or anything. I've heard of some bettas trying to actively attack their own reflections but my Bismarck is more on the cautious side.

Hopefully this will translate to him getting used to the platies and corydoras I intend to keep with him. :D

you may want to add just a couple fish at a time. like two. you dont want to suddenly give him a bunch of tankmates, i guess you may scare him.

I plan on adding the platies first, then the betta, then the corydoras over a period of a few days

I've had platies and a single male betta in 10g's before and it has worked fine.

I always found platys (and mollies) to be a bit too mouthy for a betta. My platies were always "pecking" at things (i believe they were eating itty bitty stuff off the walls and thing) and too often I saw them getting mouthy with my bettas fins. This was in a 55 community tank so I think it'd probably be even moreso in a 10g.

hmm that's something to think about. I'll make sure to keep an eye on them and if they're harassing him, I'll move the betta

I shuffle my fish around from tank to tank, by betta has no problems with danios, killifish, ottos, platties, cories, or the rummynose and shrimp in there now...
