Thanks for all the replies. I think people exaggerate the aggressive tendencies of bettas. I'm glad to hear that people have actually successfully kept them with others. I'll see next week when my tank finishes cycling if it all works out
Typically if you add the betta to a tank with fish in it already you'll always be better off then adding them into his sole territory. With my betta, I can't see him hurting anything, he's kind of a wuss. If the betta has been in a tank for a while by himself, you can pull him out, re-arrange the decor, add the new fish and put him back in. New tank, maybe add a couple platy first.

He's not in the tank right now. He's in a bowl. When the ten gallon is done cycling, I'll add the other fish first and then the betta so he wont think the whole tank is his territory.
