Platies

I'm not sure if they are wild type but they are not any recognizeable color morph in the links.

Some are grayish green but most are orangish black in some type.

They were purchased as feeder fish.

I wish I could get some pictures.

But I'm still saving for a good digital camera.

Not a whole lot of funds right now.

undefinedundefinedI love my platties, i like to add a group of the same color to my tanks, and with the blue background they really stand out. i have 5 sunset in one tank, (3f,2m) and they breed happily, in the other tank i have 4 red wag (2m,2f) and they have not had any fry. herd they tend to be starile, wanting to get 3 more females to keep the peace. great, all over the place, fish, great splashes of color for the aquaria. :dive2: :bday:

I would like to get a platy or two (females) for my tank. Aren't females less aggressive? Will they need males or will they do well without males? Anyways, I would like a solid coloured one, like a deep orange, red, or yellow, because I think that will stand out in my densely planted ten gallon with black background.

Female platies can be aggressive, too. I remember reading a post recently somewhere about here, where somebody was wondering why that seems to be more prevalent recently. But, by and large, they're pretty peaceful (an aggressive platy would be a pretty peaceful cichlid--IME, they just sort of charge each other, no nipping). Females don't need males, but the males will "keep them busy", which makes the tank more lively. It also leads to lots of little ones, though, so be careful...

I love platies. They are very peaceful and have great personalities. I like watching them more than my pristella tetras.

If anyone's interested, this place sells lots of varieties (I've never purchased anything there yet though so can't report on the service):

They also have some pics of the different color variations.

when i bought my sunset platties i only got one male and 4 females, and they all looked mature but a month or so later female turmed male, maybe to keep the balance. sure is big for a male thou. said to be bought 3:2 females, due to males appetite for love. Danio's keep the fry in Check, and i have a grow out tank for others that i can catch, ooh, the fry r getting big and now i want another tank for the teenagers, lol :joke: but there again Angles r gonna love medium fry, Perfect weekend food sorry didn't mean to ramble. fun fish!

Reccomend a variety of platy to look at.

I currently have 6 'wild type' platies and am looking to get a couple more female platies.

Thanks
I keep some, I have some lovely blue moons, but would kill for some actual wilds. They look nothing like what is at the pet store.

I like the pineabpple platies. Handsome fish, if you're still looking. It looks a lot like the "Dawn" platy in the link a few posts above.
