Platy blowing bubbles

What does it mean when my Platy (two males & one [we think pregnant] female) blow bubbles at the top of the tank. Is it a lack of oxygen in the water or something to do with mating!?!? :help:

P.S. they are in a 4gal tank...I know I know...!

It's not anything to do with mating, I am pretty sure. It may be that the water has become overloaded with waste - how is your tank organized? Do you have filtration, make frequent partial water changes (especially important to do this very often in a small tank, maybe more than once a week, based on keeping Platys in it). Do they look like they are gasping or spending a lot of time breathing air at the surface?
 
i agree sounds like o2 probs do you have any plants in there??(live) do a 50% water change and treat with water conditioner. but you really need a larger tank and also im supprised the female is still alive ! you should stock platy's 2:1 f:m coz their horney little bug gers
 
I do a 25% water change (with conditioner) every other day along with scooping out excess wast. The tank does have a filter ant they almost never "just swim at the top." They are actually pretty active.
 
Sounds like there is nothing to worry about then. Maybe try every 3 days for a water change...every other day sounds like hard work! I don't know enough about the breed of fish to say for sure...maybe a Platyphile can be of more help.
 
I was curious so I looked it up on google and it said lack of o2 could be a cause for it to blow bubbles or waste in the water was overwhelming? I don't know if either of these are true but I thought I'd let ya know what I saw. Good lucK!
