Platy discoloration/disease?

I purchased two red platys about early October. Recently, I have noticed their color dimming to a less blood red, more pale. Also, they both seem to be developing dark areas between scales, mostly on their back and most towards their noses, some coming down the sides.

Any ideas?

They do not look lethargic, and neither one seems to be lacking hunger. Recently, I have seen one briefly rubbing on a rock in the tank.

Thanks!

Another Idea: could this be semi-normal for Platys? A paler red with darker bits on the back towards the nose? Not sure?

Have they grown in size? Many (most!) of the livebearers (mollies, platies, etc) are hybrids and carry genes of several color variants. It is certainly possible (and common) for them to develope color as they grow.
The rubbing on the rock may have nothing to do with it.

Thanks!

Yes they have grown, and I was wondering about that, as I have seen many different spotted, and multi colored Platys! I hope thats the case!

Any other ideas?

Watch carefully for parasites. Ich can cause the fish to start scratching agains objects in the tank. Look for info about ich and be watching.

Just my 2¢
