i bought a platy(male) for my 10 gallon tank mildly planted(soon to be totally mossy YAY) its tank mates are 2 guppies(male, first fish in the tank) 4 neon tetras(i know 6 but two died im planning to buy more tomorrow, these where introduced at the same time as the platy) ok well my question is that why is my platy constantly hiding under my driftwood it only comes when theres food and then he pushs the other fish away eats then goes back to the same place and sits there till the next feeding why?

Assuming that everything is as it should be with water quality, I don't think you really have anything to worry about. You didn't say how long this fish has been in there.... Relatively new? Was he always this shy?

I have three rather good sized Blood Parrots (as in my avatar). They're the biggest things in the tank by a good bit. I put them in, and they disappeared into a cave for a week. Only came out to eat. They're getting braver by the day though... They've been in there almost two months and they are still hiding a lot. Some fish take a long time to relax.

If it's a new fish, it's probably just your basic fish paranoia that will pass when he begins to feel comfortable in his new home.

no he was swimming with the guppies as if he was one of them and then one day after hockey training i noticed that he hasnt in the tank which is really weird because it was totally covered so i figured my eyes were just going lol and the lights were off (this was after 930) so i just figured his in the back somewhere just sleeping so the next morning at feeding i still couldnt see hhim so i lifted up the driftwood its a long piece thats kinda bow like so its possble for like a tetra to get in no problem but a platy i didnt think so i lifted it up there he was lieing sidewards under this driftwood i feeded the fish and after he eat a bit he just went striagh back under i watched him and it was a tight fit. he swims normal just he has to lie sidewards to fit in. oh and he was in the tank a week 2 weeks maybe before all this happened and all the water permetres are fine got any clue

It might be that he misses his own kind. The platy IS a schooling fish, so you do need at least two more platys in there for them to be happy.

The main reasons platies hide are, stress/fear from being moved or spooked, illness, or while giving birth. If your's is male you can rule out the last one. I suggest watching very closely for signs of illness, while at the same time trying to avoid spooking it further with sudden movements around the tank or tapping on the glass. I can't see neons or guppies being a scary threat to the platy. They are happier with their own kind, however they don't stick as close together in a tight school as the neons do.. That is definately not normal platy behavior..

Look closely at all your platy's fins, they will usually fold them up and keep them tucked in close to their body when they are not feeling well. When the fish is healthy and happy the fins will remain open and fanned out most of the time...
