So i am getting my 135gal going and just added plants from other tanks to it and let them grow for a while. then last sunday i added 14 platys (7 red wag and 7 sunburst) the fish look really stunning under the lights, but i noticed a few days ago they started eating my plants. from what it looks like they are just nibbling on the dead leaves but i have seen them pick at live ones too. i feed them twice a day. right now im watching about seven of them attacking a plant at once.

has anyone else had this type of problem with platys? is there anything i can do to stop it?
thanks

That's strange. My platies only eat dead, loose leaves off my plants. What kind of fish food do you feed them?

they get Wardley essentials tropical flakes. the closer i watch them i think they are trying to eat the green leaves but dont really hurt them, but boy they sure are going crazy on the dead but still attachie ones. hopefully they will stop once they eat all the dead leaves.

They should, but if they don't I would change up the food you give them. If they get a variety of food, they should become less interest in the plants. IMO

Try sticking some lettuce or blanched zucchini or peas on a fork and placing it in the tank. I do this occassionally for my oto catfish, but my platies seem to nibble also. Remove any uneaten bits after 12-24hrs.

I really too some time today to watch them and I found they are only eating the dead leaves off the plants they don’t even eat the veins in the leaves. Ill have to try the pea’s thing, I put cucumber in it for my pleco, he will finish off a 6" long peace in about 12 hrs.

That's strange. I keep 3 red wag platies in a heavily planted 45 gallon, and they don't bother my plants at all. They've actually been a real benefit to my tank, since they spend all day picking algae off my plants.
