play sand ??? anyone.

my dad just bought about 300 LBS worth of playsand for a 72 gallon tank good thing it is cheap! :rolleyes:lol

playsand is great, just make sure you wash it, then when you are done washing it, wash it again.

Yes you can use white playsand... you can use purple play sand if you wanted (crayola brand is safe anyway).

First week or so, no matter how well you rinse the sand you'll have cloudy water and floating particles... it will eventually go away.

Pool Filter sand costs slightly more and doesn't cloud the water.[/QUOTE]

That is my next experiment.. I love my Tahitian Moon but the filter sand looks interesting and says it is uniformly smooth. Want to see just how well it stays on the bottom... The moon sand is gonna be hard to beat.

I used playsand and didn't have any clouding problems at all. Maybe I'm just lucky :)

Rinse and make sure it is not thicker than an inch in your tank

Regular florescent lights are fine but you will want to change the bulbs. The standard bulbs in florescent lights are the wrong color spectrum. They won't make your fish look good, and they will also cause a big algae bloom.

Clean construction sand already has silt or fines in it which takes work to rinse, but play sand is construction sand with clay or mud added in it so that the sand will stick together for kids to play with. I admit I haven't used it but have read about using it and everything I have read said if you don't want cloudy water and an easier time rinsing, don't buy play sand buy construction course sand (easiest to rinse) or fine silica sand a bit harder to rise.

I have 14 tanks with various colors and textures of play sand in them :)
