Ive just recently replaced my old black gravel with some pre-washed (and then thoroughly washed) play sand from home depot. Heres some pictures with a few shots of the gravel texture as well.

Roughest gravel textures. the black is small pieces of the old gravel

Nice tank and fish. What are your plans with that channel cat in the future? They grow pretty darn fast. I use to have a one over 2 feet that l kept in my koi pond.

I have a 120 gallon in storage but that is a last resort because im living upstairs right now, and i don't wanna take the chance on the floor trying to hold that much weight. im really hoping maybe keeping him in a slightly smaller tank (like this 40 when a few others have migrated on) will stunt his growth a bit. im not into the monster fish really.

If i really start to have trouble i wont fight to keep him, theres a lot of LFS in an hours drive or so that would take him at any size. I just dont wanna get rid of it either... i tend to get attached to my fish lol

update: first day cleaning the sand! for those who are interested in the substrate

i took my normal gravity-powered gravel cleaner and skimmed it across the surface of the sand. since i took those pictures last, there's about 4 new spots where they've dug to the glass, so they really seem to be moving the sand around a lot. All of the poop was just sitting on the top of the sand collecting in a few small areas. i moved all the sand around after to release any gasses or trapped poo, and to my surprise it was VERY clean, with no odour. I plan on doing these just like a normal gravel tank, with a change and vacuum every 2 weeks.

But for those interested in "upgrading" to play sand, i say go for it. The fish love it, and it looks great!

good looking tank and fish
