Play sand...

That is what I use in my tanks.
I recommend root tabs and ferts but I like it.
Make sure you rinse the heck out of it though.
 
Yes I used the Lowes playsand in all of my tanks
just be sure to clean the sand really well before you add it to your tanks
great for plants as well
 
I use the playsand...I don't even bother to rinse it.
 
I have the Leslies pool filter sand in my cichlid tank. It's very natural looking, easy to clean, and as mentioned before, it stays on the bottom.
 
I have Playsand though mine came from Menards. I got a shload of MTS to keep it stirred up. It was cheap, easy to rinse, looks nice and fish love sifting through it.
 
Another vote for pool filter sand. $11/bag seems a bit much tho. It's $6-7 here in NE Ohio.

If pool filter sand is a bit TOO uniform for your taste, you can always mix in some play sand with it.
