Play "Stock that tank" for 17gal with unusual footprint

I would LOVE to have gertrudes or furcatas in it. Unfortunately they are not that common to come by here. Also, ever had "one of those fishes" that jsut never worked out for you? Ya, that's me and Furcatas. I took several stabs at them (no, not literally lol) a couple years ago and although the dwarf rainbows flourished, I could never seem to keep furcatas swimming for more than a few weeks and I'm concerned about keeping a fish here that I need to be constantly worrying about.

I like the idea of rainbowfish as your stock, particularly any of the blue-eyed bows like pseudomugil gertrudae or furcatus. I think a group of 5-7 of either the gertrudes or furcatas would be nice, along with about 10 habrosus or pygmaeus cories (slightly more active than pandas imo) and shrimp of some sort (amano, atya, neocaridina, etc). This is the stock I'd love to have for an office tank in the 15-20g range. The biggest I felt comfortable having was a 5g and that was at a nature preserve. I didn't want to press my boss for permission to set up a 10g or anything bigger, as I hadn't been working at that particular job for very long at that point. I envy your future aquarium setup!

Shrimps I can definitely add. I have a big tank of Cherry shrimmp at home that I would be happy to bring some in if this tank is a go.
As for the size, that's one of the reasons that I built the last one ( and this one) in the dimensions it was/is. I wanted something long enough to give me some options, but not so high or wide that it would take over the desk or cause issues.

I would love to get Rams ( Always wanted them, have never had them) but as far as I know they don't do well in new tanks so have to hold off on that one. Could do angels like I did in the last one, but already had those plus if I don't have a big tank at home set up by the time they out grow this one then i have an issue.

Dwarf gourami?
Neons..cardinals..betta..rainbows...
keep the ideas coming..
couple of goldfish and a few koi maybe?

everyone exhale.. I was kidding about the last one.

How about some shell dweller cichlids? They are really fasinating to watch, and would win over any coworkers who might not like the tank.

Or if you really want planted, a tank with shrimp, a few ottos, threadfin rainbows and pygmy cories would be fun.

I know this is like a year old, but what happened??! lol

Shrimp seem to make maintenance more difficult for me, I don't know if that's the case with you. Like the same way duckweed is a great nutrient exporter but makes maintenance annoying, shrimp make it hard to do just a quick and easy water change. I always seem to end up sucking them up or having to worry about them one way or another. I am lucky enough to have well water, but if I had city water I'd be worried about adding freshly dechlorinated water that was mixed with hot water to achieve proper temp...

They also tend to breed prolifically, which, while cool at first, can make it unmanageable.

I would just keep it super simple and do Endlers livebearers and dwarf cories. Sand with rocks (no real driftwood, so as not to leach tannins, or at least thoroughly cured driftwood) and only basic plants, like Crypts and Anubias.

OMG, did you just trick me into resurrecting an old thread with you? ;) Ok well, at least the person was on relatively recently...8/17. Who knows, maybe they are still subscribed to this thread?

:rofl::evil_lol:

Just my 0.02$...rainbows. They are not my thing, but I think a school of rainbows would be colorful and really love the long, but not wide tank.

Or, 20 neon tetras (that's my thing).
If you do a black background, consider neon yellow (yellow is the opposite of black for color, so there should be good contrast) rasboras. They're smaller than neons when full grown, but are pretty colorful. You could pair them up with a small school of glow lights, too. I can't imagine why you'd want panda cories though. Corydoras Paleatus, ftw!

I got suckered, too!
