Please don't let it be flukes or something sinister like that...

Hey, Corrie. How are Ory, Archie, and Ellie. I hope they are feeling better.

I've been trying to get a moment out to get those GH and KH kits, hence the no replying. Ory and Archie are looking much better, and sometimes Ellie does - but the redness on her fins seems to be getting better and then comes back with a vengeance.

I did a 30% WC yesterday and redosed. Also discovered that my filter has a bit of carbon in it, so maybe that's why I haven't been seeing results as fast as I want.

Quick update - ich seems to be gone, and fins aren't ragged anymore. They are all still bloodshot, and Ellie is now showing a greenish goldish patch on her stomach. She is REALLY fat and scales sticking out ever so slightly, but not pineconed. I hope it's not dropsy. I thought I might be overfeeding them so they've been on a fast since Saturday...but she seems to be getting fatter. I also thought she might be eggbound, but zero experience with that, so don't know what you all think. I've also shown Ory in his favoured corner - I blocked it off with a load of anarchis and he still gets wedged in. I have to free him now. *sigh*

I did GH and KH tests the other day, but the results are downstairs and I'm desperately trying to finish an assignment I was given so this is the extent of my ACing tonight. They were high though, so I guess that means my pH won't crash? If it does I will make the effort.

I'm tired of worrying about them now.

It is hard to say whether Ellie has dropsy or not. Have they shown spawning behavior yet? Try to limit their feeding rations to once a day and fast one day per week. See if this will slow down her fattening process. Add a chopped pea on its meal, of course.

Sorry it's taking me so long to reply - I'm trying not to panic and take things levelly. If it were dropsy, would it have had a much worse effect by now? (As in would she have died?) She is looking even fatter - I've been feeding much less and largely peas, but I don't think it's overfeeding because Ory and Archie aren't looking fat...they are actually looking rather slimmer than normal. My partner got home today and his first comment was 'Wow Ellie is looking really fat". She still has a greeny gold patch on her chest. ShouldI QT her? The other two are looking the picture of health now, apart from streaky tails still.

I'd quarantine Ellie, Corrie. Only way to determine what is causing her to bloat continuously would be necropsy unfortunately. Have you started using medicated foods, Corrie? Progold I think does this. Feed only Ellie, not the others as they don't need it.

I hope Ellie will be OK. I'm glad the others seem to be better.

I can't get hold of any medicated meds - I went into the LFS and asked for it and they were like 'what?' I can't afford to buy off the internet, I'm having a serious money crisis...these illnesses have stretched the bank and I have to eat! She's been QTed but is looking really terrible...she has big red streaks on her sides, the goldy green has spread, and her scales are really sticking out. I thought she might be constipated but having put her in a barebottom tank, she isn't...the weird thing is apart from being massive, she is behaving as normal. She is alert, eating like a pig...I am wondering if it's a complication because she is stunted? I don't know what her history is, I got her as a rescue fish and she looked in pretty bad shape when I first got her. I remember chefjamesscot had a fish in his museum tank which he thinks died because it started growing again...is this a possible cause? I will try get photos, but my camera isn't good enough to show the detail of it. Her fins are looking less bloodshot, but her face has huge trails of blood down it (under the skin).

corrie, i think at this point you're really worrying too much! she looks as though she improved since all this began. granted, the bloody streaks are still a concern. however, i think she may just be stressed and septicemic. i wouldn't medicate further, except to keep the water super clean and use some melafix if you can get it. i know lupin and mtiffany aren't super fond of it, but i have used it in the past with good results. it is definitely not one of the big-guns antibacterial or antifungal treatments like maracyn, but it is gentle, all-natural and easy on the immune system. don't try to substitute melafix for a powerful med, but it can help fish that are already on the mend.

if she had dropsy from something bacterial you would see pineconing already. you may be seeing a kidney problem such as minor kidney failure or tumors in the kidney. which is yet another reason to stop medicating. her kidney will be working harder the more meds you add. the melafix is easy on the system. even if you can't or don't want to use melafix, clean water and some rest should help her improve.

If the fish is still willing to eat, I prefer to use ampicillin fish gel food. It is cheap and works best for internal infections.
