Please Help- Dying fish

Right now I have 1 guppy in a 2.5 gallon tank (I now know that this is a terrible setup, but did not when I bought it). I have no idea about ph and the such, because I did not think I needed it with such a small tank. I now know a lot more about fish (since researching) and am planning to buy a larger tank, but I still have the guppy.

I came home from the library today to find my guppy's tail fin sucked into the bottom of the filter (a whisper mini). About half of its body was pulled in, and my dad had to pull it out with his fingers after I turned the filter off.

This fish has looked sickly forever, but nothing I've done seems to help. Now, its back fin is all torn, the back of its body is squished, and it is only breathing laboriously. I cannot imagine this fish will survive, but I don't want to put it down unnecesarily. I hate to put it through any more suffering, though.

I know that I cannot sever its head and I dont know where I would find clove oil. I just don't know what to do. I feel like a horrible owner and just don't want a living thing to suffer unnecessarily.

Please Help!
 
I would say euthanize it. Put it in a container of water and freeze it if you don't have the heart to remove its head or have clove oil on hand.
 
Poor Mo died last night before I was able to do anything, saving me from a horrible decision. I'm seriously tempted to give up this hobby for now. I'm away at school, I graduate in May, I will probably be moving home for a while afterwards before moving out into my own apartment. I cannot imagine starting up a new tank under those conditions. Maybe i'll just get a betta ....

I was reading an aquarium book, and according to the authors, the most humane way to put a fish down was to throw it as hard as you can against a flat hard surface :P .... I guess it does the trick, but theres probably better ways .
 
a betta would be fun, you can pick out a really pretty one- give him a nice live plant and a snail companion!
 
Sorry about poor Mo.

After reading all the various posts about sick fish and how to humanely end suffering, I decided to be prepared and got some clove oil. I found it at a heath food store. Hopefully, I'll never need it.
