change in pH due to water change could have been the killer! sudden change in pH will cause fish to show rapid breathing (rapid movement of gills) which I read elsewhere that the fish is feeling like their gills are burning. I've made this mistake a couple fo times so now I'm always testing the pH of the new water and matching it with aquarium water before adding to ensure reduce stress and reduce sudden pH change.
