I was under the impression that a protein skimmer would not work in brackish water. There is not enough salinity to increase the surface tension of the water enough to get the proteins to that glomming stage to bubble them out. I could be wrong, as I've never tried it, but I don't think it would work as well as in a marine tank.
Matt, A protein skimmer is entirely optional and will require a SG of at least 1.006 to work but a internal air driven protein skimmer proves invaluable on brackish tanks. Many brackish fish are carnivores that produce large amounts of high protein waste, in freshwater this would be taken care of by water changes but in marine and brackish tanks water changes are no longer free due to the cost of the salt. Protein skimmers remove these proteins and many other toxins from the water to prolong the time between water changes and create a better environment for the fish.
Of course the idea of a skimmer is optional for each hobbyist and I try to look at any long term ordeal when keeping larger waste producing species. But then again, this is my thought on the subject and if any others here can add to this would be welcome what if your view be either way, negative or positive about the skimmer.

I use very basic protein skimmers on all my high salinity brackish tanks although it collects a tiny bit of "slush" and to me thats a great result to say the tanks mainly house messy puffers.
anything lower than 1.010 i get no results.
but i guess if you use a top notch over size skimmer it will give u even better results.

Sir, it will not do as well as being on a marine tank with a higher salinity, but it still should prove helpful for the long term of your aquarium inhabitants. I agree even thou that the brackish be 1.010 for the best results
I am very glad for you young lady and now you need to try to move its diet to more nutritional foods and as a variety as best you can. It not mean that you feed a variety in each meal, only one or two types of foods and feed differently each time. It not mean however that you cannot feed shrimp two weeks back to back, just that you need to widen its diet as best you can.
