Please help me choose wisely

2 ADFs (African dwarf frogs). Maybe 3.

Hey gagilla this ought to make you happy. Go to wal-mart some time and look at all those bettas in a half full 8oz cup. Dont you think that a 1 gallon tank with filtration is a better fate than most of them will have. Also in you pic you specify iggigation channels which is why there is water in them all the time. Before human started interfering during the dry season they would live in puddles and they still do because they live in more than just the rice patties. Why do you think they have evovlved to handle high concentrations of ammonia and can breath air?? I put a betta in a 30 gallon once and it was dead in 2 days from stress. Ive kept one in a 2.5 gallon now for 4 years. My grandmother has had one in a bowl with some rocks on her dresser for 3 years still doing good.

The betta's that we buy are not even close to the ones in the wild. So there really should be no comparison anyway. The betta's are only housed in those little cups as a means of keeping them separate until they find homes, they are by no means meant to live in something that small. 2.5 gallons is the smallest I would go with a betta. I have had them in 1g-55g tanks and I can promise you that most of them are happier in the big tanks. Having kept one in a 1g I can tell you that it is not the best conditons for them and I personally will never do it again.

the only thing that can live well in there would be 1 small shrimp, like a ghost or a cherry, not "a few" like too many people here have said. or 2-3 male least killies would work in there, too. definetly not a betta. before I got my 10g, I was forced (by finacial reasons) to keep him in a 1/2g bowl, and I hated it as much as he did. poor guy just sawm in circles all day long and looked so sad. :( and then, a miracle happened and i got my 10g, and when I let him in the tank, he was so happy, I just felt like singing "Born Free".

Ok look this is the last thing im gonna say on this topic cause im not looking to argue. I think that sometimes people get a little emotional on there opinions and views of things. I was not recomending that a betta be kept in a 1 gallon as I due not agree with this I was simply stateing that the betta would do fine in there. Would it be the best life? No but Im simply stateing its better than some other peoples alternatives. I look at it like this some poor guy from the country has a dog he used to hunt with. The dog is kept outside most of the day and eats the store brand dog food but is loved and well taken care off. Someone from the city has a glamour dog that goes to the groomers once a week and doggie day care while there at work and eats sirloin for dinner. Does this mean that the first dog isnt happy? sure he is cause its all he knows. Could he be happier? Maybe but hes content in his own world. Is the guy that owns the hunting dog a bad owner? No and know one would tell him he is either cause its an exceptable way to keep a dog. A 1 gal tank with a filter and a light is a hell of a lot better than a tiny bowl for a betta and im sure that a betta will be happy in it as its probably never known much bigger.

in a one gallon tank? In my opinion that's a bit too many adfs, I only have one at the minute, with a few ishies in 15 gals, im gettin one, possible 3 more at the very most. as far as i know these little guys like lots of space, but I mean they are really tiny so maybe... what do ye think?they're so entertaining though, i'd chose them over fish any day!!

what about a male guppy or two? they're really pretty fish

lads, ye sure like to argue on these boards. It's hillarious. It's like ye're all trying sooooo hard to show who knows the most . RELAX

Jentry, i based that on what I've read about amphibian keeping. Philip de Vosjoli, an apparently well respected president of some amphibaian organisation, says that 'small groups' of ADFs do well in 1 gallon (9 inch cube) tanks. In the wild they live in stagnant puddles, but saying this could lead to arguments and people throwing pictures of irrigation at me.;) I have 4 in a 25gal with various fish and shrimp. They're not the most active creatures in the world.

A one gallon is probably too small for a guppy. Anyway, male guppies look better if kept in groups and with females they can display to.
