I have a 29 gallon tank with 2 orandas that I adore.
I recently got a 125 gallon and I'm stuck on whether to use it for about 5 comet goldies, or an oscar, Jack Dempsey, and some sillver dollars.
Any ideas or thoughts would be much appreciated. What fish do you think would bring the most enjoyment?

Well, I would put the orandas in the big tank, mabey add a few more or mabey some other kind of goldfish(im not positive what other types of goldies would work with them, mabey someone can chime in). then use the 29 for a comunity setup, guppies or mollies or tetras oh my!

P.S. nice name ;)

it depends on what you would rather see. a small school of comets or some intelligent and aggressive interaction between a couple big cichlids. you can also look into a semi-aggressive tank with the silver dollars, some bichirs, Synodontis catfish, and medium cichlids like firemouth, parrots, etc.

Thanks, Reptileguy

I'm actually looking for not so much aggression, but intelligence. I've never had oscars before, but a friend of mine does, and I love the way they interact with her. Are goldfish as intelligent?
Are oscars as violent as their reputation? I would probably do one oscar with a j.d. or firemouth, and some silver dollars.
I understand how messy they can be as adults, so am I looking at a 50 gallon water change weekly in a 125?
Thanks

with any tank i would do at least 50% water change at least weekly. some oscars are worse than others. they are tame compared to some cichlids. goldfish arent as intelligent, but im sure some goldfish people might argue that. if you are looking for less aggression i would go with a couple oscars rather than an oscar and a jack dempsey. silver dollars arent very intelligent so if you want intelligence drop the school of silver dollars and add another oscar. with more than one cichlid you run the risk of them fighting, but your best chances will be if you add them all at the same time and they grow up together. you will need a lot of filtration in there. are you familiar with the bichirs at all (Polypterus spp.)?

well i've had many goldfish in the past and they are intelligent but it depends on the fish itself. some are just blah, others are more interesting, and recognize me (and no not only at feeding times :) ) you just have to be darn accurate on the whole selection part with goldies
