Ok I have a 3 year old green severum and one eye is bulging out with a big white ring around it ..... popeye I suppose , I bumped up the heat to 84ish and added salt . Now the problem is I have about 150$ worth of fish in with him , that being a 8pack loach pack , small P-Bass a delhezi bichir and an indo dat . Does this disease spread and what other steps do you suggest to correct the problem . Im responsible because I slacked on the cleaning regimine cuz I had some other problems going and Im afraid to move her cuz it sticks out so far and the whole side of her head is swollen . HELP PLEASE

sorry to say that once the eye pops out, it is often too late to cure the disease.

the best thing to do is begin a series of regular water changes. Popeye generally only occurs in water with high levels of waste in it.

the water changes and salt will help the white ring, but the eye will likely not go back in.

the disease (a bacterial infection) is not contagious, but in a tank with poor water quality, more than one fish can get it independently of one another. Don't panic as far as the other fish goes, but begin with a 1/3 water change immediately. Dechlorinate as usual.

could you post your water paramaters (ammonia, nitrite and nitrate)?

amm 0 nitrites 0 nitrates through the roof . did a 50 % w/c yesterday and a 25% this morning and will continue with 25% daily till i can get it under control . I had problems with another specific fish in another tank and spent all my energy with it . usually do 50% once a week and was 4 days late on a change :headshake2:

sorry to say, but if nitrates are going through the roof (how much exactly?) when you're four days late on a water change, you might have some overstocking/overfeeding issues. what do the nitrates usually read at the time of your water changes, if you test them?

Sorry for the late reply , the tank is a 90 gallon growout tank for 3 3" indo dats , a senagal bichir , and a delhezi bichir . It was permanent home for a 8 pack of clown loaches, the 8" green severum and a spotted rapheal . I had a 13" jureunese catfish in another tank that was fighting for his life and tank maint was slacked for 12 days , I was wrong about amm , it was .025 and my card didnt go high enough for the nitrites :headshake2: . I did water changes daily adding salt but i caught it too late. My wife had to put her down this morning , so it is a really sad day . She was one of my first fish 3 years ago and she will be missed . Thank you for all your advice but rest assured I will not let this happen again

ammonia was .25 and nitrites so high you couldn't measure??

sounds like a tank crash

how long was the tank set up?

did you add any meds to it(antibacterial)?

I have had fish survive losing eyes.
but if the params are out of whack it is a tough struggle.

sorry for your loss

Whoa. You should move those fish to other tanks. You're luck anything is alive in there.

Yeah I dont think any of these fish would make it around a 2' aro la 8" paraya or a 13" oscar . These are the occupants of both my 180s . The tank is back to normal now 0 0 30 .Thanks for the help
