I have had my 29 gallon fw tank for about a month now. Everyone seems healthy and happy but I am having the hardest time keeping my ammonia down. I have done water changes and reduced feeding but I just want to make sure I am doing what I am supposed to. This is my first tank and I thought I knew what I was doing but I obviously need some help.

Thanks.

Unfortunatley, there isn't much more you can do at this point other the WC. Keep doing them, twice daily if need be. You can also try to put in some bio-spira and see if that helps.

In a 29 gallon I would say you were ok on stocking, but since you haven't yet cycled, the more fish you have, the more on top of the ammonia and nitrite levels you will need to be.

But you are doing everything you need to be, You've reduced your feeding, and are doing WC. Just keep it up, and as long as you are diligent, all of your fish should come through just fine.

My only other suggestion is to turn the heat up to about 78-79 to promote bateria growth, and if you can find it, put in some biospira.

Additionally, if you have or know of a mature tank, see if you can get some of the filter media, or at least some gravel to help speed up your cycle. If you're going to use gravel, just throw it into an old pantyhose and lay it on the bottom of the tank, that way you don't mix the different gravel. And if you are taking doner media or gravel, make sure the tank is healthy.

Please Feel free to PM me at any time if you need any extra help.

:iagree:

I had really good luck with Cycle, too.

I am new and was killing fish but got some great hlp and am doing a little better but I am using a product called prime from petsmart and it helps with clorine, nitrates and nitrites as well as the coating. I am going 25% water changed daily and adding the prime. and am getting better.
