Hi all,
I have a fish called ‘greg’ he’s a fancy goldfish and he’s my pride and joy. I got him about 6 months ago and a couple of weeks ago he started to act weird. I had him in a 40l tank with three other small fish until he started acting weird and I noticed a big lump on his right side. I quarantined him in a 20l tank. And got meta fix I’ve been doing this for about a week he seemed to get better and the lump started to shrink sort off. But he’s doing my worst now he’s floating around and upside down and is very latharguc. Where the lump was his scales lifted up so I guess it’s dropsey. But now he has black spots on him by those scales and is underneath him. He’s still swimming and has a few bursts of energy. He sometimes eats it depends. His tank is perfects I’ve done a water test and there fine. Does anyone know how I can help or what it is??
Maybe still dropsy? He’s not a pu come yet only where the lump was but the lump has shrunk. Please help

Sorry for your issues!

Could be a lot of things. 10gal is not enough water to properly keep a single fancy goldfish by themselves.

How often did you change water and how much water did you change? My guess at this point is water quality issues.

Your goldfish surely has problems with space, in a 35 gallon tank you can keep a couple of goldfish without any problem. I AM NOT completely sure of what I am going to tell you, but apparently, in a small space, goldfish do not grow properly, however their internal organs do so anyway, causing internal problems. One tip that I always give to those who start in aquarism, is to get the largest tank they can.

Hi EllaWella, sorry for your troubles. I dont know what is going on with your fish. the scales lifting up do sound like dropsy. Goldfish are my all time favorite fish, but for them to thrive they do need a pretty big tank , 20 gallon is to small, also they need colder water temps than most fish, if you have a heater in there that could have started your troubles.I kept mine in a 75 with no heater. I live in Georgia and did have trouble one year because my house temperature got high and therefor the tank temp went up too. They sell chillers for coldwater fish although I never tried them.Eventually i built a very large pond for them where they spent the summer, in the winter I brought them inside to the 75 gallon tank although they would have done very nicely wintering outside.the little cuties even bred outside in the pond, also their colors were amazing when they spent time outside. Also, the pond was well shaded so the temperature stayed cool for them, it also was 3 foot deep.Dont feel bad, we all loose fish, you might try watching videos on youtube for some extra info. Good luck.

My goldfish are currently very small so I am planning on upgrading their tank. I change the water once every 2 weeks and I change about a 1/3 of it. The water is fine as I’ve tested it. They are kept without a heater so always in cold temps. I still don’t know what’s wrong with him :(

well the only other thing could be to may fish in the tank. goldfish need space. also, I have never done well with them with any other kind of fish with them.

They are all goldfish but they are all tiny apart from greg as they currently have tons of space for their size

"Goldfish" is a pretty generic term. What specific ones? How many? What specific "other" fish?

"His tank is perfects I’ve done a water test and there fine." To general...exact readings please...and from a good liquid test kit.

A 40L tank is not ideal, IMO.

He’s a butterfly fancy tailed goldfish. There’s 4 of them but the other three are very very small about 2 cm. they aren’t all butterfly’s one is another butterfly the other two are fantailed goldfish.

Ammonia- 0.4 mg/l
And 0 mg/l
GH - 14d
Kh- 6d
Ph- 7.4
Cl - 0

Like I said I’m planning on upgrading the tank when they grow.

Ella, the minimum tank size I would do for two fancy goldfish (by themselves) is standard 29g tank. Even this is debatable because most folks will only do goldfish of any kind in ponds. If you keep a fancy goldfish in a pond or huge tank, they'll grow the size of a cantaloupe.
