Please help!

My fish have velvet and I haven't been able to get to the store to buy meds yet (I have problems), so I'm keeping the lights off and I turned on the heater so it would be @ 80 like recommended. I also add a little bit of salt. Table salt b/c I'm out of aquarium salt. I thought it was the same thing b/c people collect salt from the ocean sometimes and it's safe. The same salt in freshwater would probably be the same kind.

Well, the heat kept climbing every time I monitored it and I kept turning it down until I finally shut it off before I went to bed. No problem right? It was off, the water would be fine.

It's almost 5 am, I can't sleep so I'm downstairs and went to check the temp just incase and as I'm getting closer, there's my big bala shark floating upside down dead! Even closer and there's my hatchet fish! The water temp was at 82. I've have these fish for so long an I feel horrible. I was really crying over my poor fish. You aquarium people probably understand.

Could the velvet have progressed so much as to unlikely kill two fish at the same time or was it the water temperature. Or the salt?

I murdered my fish! Some one please tell me what to do.

As soon as the stores open tomorrow, I'm getting over there and buying velvet meds. I'll also call a fish store and ask for advice but some one please help in the meantime!

given the several 'changes' you made in the tank, at the same time, there's really no way to tell if any of these changes killed the fish, and if any, which one. in any event, guessing will not help the fish. get the proper meds and use them. velvet can and will kill fish if it progresses enough.

Well, from the last thread we learned your tank was severely over stocked. And thats probably the reason your fish got a disease. I know you don't want to give some of your fish away, but, for the fishes sake, I would. By the way, you didn't murder your fish, it just sometimes happens that way, so don't feel bad.

One of my whiptail catfish died too.

I did a partial water change and put in the Mardel meds for Velvet.

It looks like this sickness is getting rid of my fish for me... But you guys are right.

I think I'll find homes for the more common fish and keep the "special" ones. Aka the expensive ones. That way, I won't be so keen to buy more fish in the future at $10.00 a pop.
