Please identify my african cichlid?

Hey Tarheels910,

Are those Saulosi or Socolofi in your profile picture? I've had what looks to be the same fish, bought years ago, but I don't remember what species. Females are like yellow labs and males are like in your picture (demasoni coloring, but sized & shaped more like the albino in this thread). I do remember the fish store had them as 1 species, just don't remember which. :)

And I just timed some tank moves to let the 1 momma release her fry in my old Q tank, so there should be some survivors. Already spotted two tiny fry, and her mouth is still full too!

Yes, they are Saulosi. The females stay yellow, while the males turn blue and get vertical bars. They are great fish that stay small but can be very aggressive towards each other.

Element kid, They are not Saulosi. All Saulosi juvies are yellow. The fish in the picture is pure white. Also look at the eyes. They are red, which means this fish is albino. Saulosi dont come in an albino form anyway.

Thanks Tarheels, and active they are!

I converted from a planted tank for them, and still had a pleco in there I hadn't moved. Came home from work 1 day and the pleco was stiff as a board, all the females were swimming around as if nothing happened, and all the males where huddled in a cave. Musta been quite a fight!

i was talkin about the fish in ur avatar obviuosly

are Albino Socolofi also called albino zebras?

Shouldn't be, they're a different genus and species (though at one time zebras were catergorized under the pseudotropheus genus, they're 'metriaclima', alternatively 'maylandia', now). While it's feaseable that an LFS (or hobbyist) will assign them common names as they please, scientific names would be more accurate.
