Crypts don't like to be fully buried. The key too with them is that they don't like to be moved. If they are, they go through a meltphase of shock, but then if left alone they come back.

As for your pleco, I am sorry for your loss. In your size tank, I find otos and amano shrimp much better algae cleaners and they don't require so much space. They are hard workers!

Just read through this thread again, do you only have 1" of gravel for your planted tank? You really need at least 2" if not 3" of gravel for the plants to develop their root systems. I'd consider getting another bag of gravel and adding a few scoops every couple of days over the existing gravel to make it deeper.
 
Before you go out and buy more gravel, what type of gravel do you have right now? If you want a planted tank, you might as well switch over to some decent substrate...

I made that mistake. Got me some 10-13mm epoxy covered gravel for my tank. It's crap. Gonna switch to ADA AquaSoil soon.
