Ok so I posted thishttp://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=233812 the other day but within this short period of time I've fallen in love with German Blue Rams. So I'm hoping I can put a pair of them in my 29 gallon tank. I have not set up the tank yet so it will be a long while before I get any fish but I would die if I could get some GBRs. So heres want I want in the end.
In my planted 29 gallon tank filtered with a penguin 150 and a Whisper 10/30i with hiding places and such. I would like to havea pair of GBRs, a school of neon tetras (6-10), a dwarf gourami, maybe some bottem feeders and some cherry shrimp and snails. So can I have all that and my Rams?

Rams can be very tricky to start. I had a new pair in perfect conditions, and they died within a week. Not to be a downer, but it happens to a lot of people. Bolivian rams are a hardier, slightly larger alternative.

Blue/Gold rams can be very inbred. And even those who are not are sensitive to water changes, nitrite, ect. Just do careful research about the fish and make sure to have a fish less cycle and then improve that by putting the tetras in for awhile. If you do lots of water changes and tests and keep a good habitat for the fish you should be fine.

I've found that the overall hardiness of blue rams depends on the source. I'd be wary of the average, run-of-the-mill ram stock as most import from Asia where breeding practices are not always ideal. A local breeder is probably the best source and there are some LFS's that get rams supplied from Europe as well.

Okay Thanks you guys! I wont be getting any fish until the tank is cycled and no rams for awhile after that. I hope I can find a local breeder but I dont know of any kind of fish breeders in north-east Kansas do any of you?

Try the aquarium society in your area. They usually have auctions when they have their monthy meetings. I found one in Kansas, here is the link.
www.kcfishclub.org or contact Steve-913-907-6343
Once I set my tank up and cycle I want to see what some folks have to offer at the auction. I joined Brooklyn Aquarium Society, for 20 bucks it's monthy meetings, auction, knowledge and a bunch of people who like fish, how can you go wrong!
