please tell me this is just algae...

i had it a while back. my siamese algae eaters demolished it. if you can get a few i would advise it. its a better solution than injuring the plant.

SAE's are good algae fish, but something thought should be put into the decision to add them to your tank. They can grow to 6" in length, and are really best in groups of 3 or more. Therefore, can your tank handle 3 6" fish?

Florida Flag Fish are also good for this type of algae, but they *can* be aggressive...not everybody reports this, but some do.

Garra Garra is another eater.

I was at Albany Aquarium today, I didn't write down the scientific name, but they had a fish they refer to as "Algae Eating Shark". It is of the genus Crossocheilus, but I do not remember the species name. It was not "siamensis" in case you are wondering. Anyway, it had a similar body shape to an SAE, but it was kind of a dark charcoal color. Anyway, they described it as "cousin" of the SAE that eats algae just as well, but stays smaller and has no known territorial issues.

Why don't the otos eat it, what about snails, will they eat it? OMG this scares me... I just got live plants.... sure don't want this to happen to my tank.

hi everyone!
thanks for all the input and suggestions. i don't think i can cut off the affected leaves as ALL the leaves have the algae on them. i'm going to cut back on food and light (we do leave the light on for 12 hrs a day sometimes, i'm sure that's part of the problem). hopefully that will be enough along with our 2 water changes a week.... will the plants die if it's not taken care of this way?

i'd love to get more fish, but we love our 5 large schools of little fish!!

thanks again!

Flourish Excel works great in killing BBA like Staghorn algae, just use at the recommended dosage for a week and you'll notice them dieing back. It's good for the plants as well.

Cutting back the photo period to 8-10hrs a day will help, 12 is a little excessive.
