Pleco?Cant tell...

One of my friends had to move away and he had a fish tank with one fish that had been given to him. Anyways he gave me the fish, well i kinda asked for it, anyways i took it and added him to my tank. Im just trying to find out a lil more about him.

He is dark brown, looks like a pleco with stripes similar to a tiger but thicker. I thought he was maybe a tiger pleco but it doesnt look like pictures i have seen. I have been feeding him algae tablets. However I only seem him at night when i turn off the lights, and i can barely make him out swimming around. Is this because he is shy or nocturnal? Should i get another to keep him company? Help me out here.

not long

he is very small and this all happened very quickly. Judging by pictures mine looks relatively newborn. He is about 1.5-2'' head to fin this is just a guestimate from the few times i see him. He hides in his plant most of the time

Nope...im guessing it must be a tiger striped well i guess only time will tell. Does anyone know why mine is so shy? only comes out at night. Is there anything i can do to get the lil guy out and about more often?
 
Could be any number of plecos. There's so many varieties, it's mind boggling. Sounds most likely as if it's a member of the peckoltia family. Try looking through the group peckoltia at

www.planetcatfish.com

Go to the cat-elog, then to the L-numbers
Most only reach between 4 and 6 inches max. If it's not in that family, there's a slight chance it could be a panaque, so check out that family too.


If it's anything like my clowns, they are the shyest pleco's I've ever seen. They only leave their driftwood after the light is out and has been out.
No matter what kind of pleco it is, you need some drift wood in your tank if you don't have any already. Some plecos need it in their diet, almost all will rasp on it, and it just makes them comfortable.

Bristlenose's are pretty shy too. I only see mine about once a week
