I got into this hobby about 6 months ago with 35 gal tank that had a 8 inch common pleco. I upgraded him to a 55 gal then to a 180 gal. I have tried to feed him veggies (zucchini mostly) tried romaine lettuce as well
I have tried algea disc as well ...the problem is i have never once seen him eat.. I just measured him and he is between 10.5 and 11 inches (he just happened to be resting by an intake tube so i think this measurment is accurate ) so he is growing so he must be eating but what ? caqn a pleco this size exist on algea ??

thanks

did you ever watch him come midnight?

i noticed that most common plecos are really active during these times eating anything from algae to other food particles in the tank..

does he see you watching? some of them don't like being watched

ive seen some that would go eat when unwatched then start acting like a rock once they see someone watching them..

are you concerned that he might not be eating? or eating enough?

My Candy Stripe never comes out and if I catch a glimpse of him, he moves so I can't see him anymore.

I've put all kinds of veggies in the tank at night and he doesn't touch them.

The times I HAVE seen him, though, he is FAT.

my pictus cat is the same way...and growing... i worried when i first got him... but after a few months and seeing him grow (when i can see him) i figured he was fine

My clown pleco is the same way. I NEVER see him. I know he eats though. He loves to eat the skin off of zucchini and cucumber. Besides that I'm not sure what he eats. Doesn't touch the spirulina wafers. When I do get a glimpse of him, he is nice and round and growing, so he must be getting his needs met.
Take care,
Mary.

here in our country, it has been a common practice of putting common plecos in ponds with other fishes...

i know that this may sound harsh but people here don't feed the pleco (btw i don't do this so please don't flame me), they just feed the fishes with the pleco

but somehow these plecos still grow large and fat, eating algae, probably leftovers from other fishes.. and maybe other things

i guess what i am trying to say is just like what jericho said.. if its growing then its probably eating, no need for concern, its just probably shy, trying to pretend like its a rock when you are around :)
